Surf legend Kelly Slater has come out with a stunning attack on GMOs and their biotech giant developers’ seed patents. In his Hawaii video, produced by the Hawai’i GMO Justice Coalition, he also criticizes the islands for allowing GM crop trials on a large scale.
Kelly Slater states in the video that “if your father dies of cancer like mine did or if you have friends who are affected by having kids with autism you start to have a lot of questions, like where are these coming from? It seems like every day we are either learning about a new disease or a higher rate of disease in children.”
“Now these large food companies have created all these seed banks and patented the seeds, so basically they own all the seeds and they are getting rid of biodiversity in alot of ways,” he added.
Slater also slated the idea that GMO labeling is in any way a bad idea; “It seems like a no brainer to me I couldn’t imagine coming out against labeling GMO foods.”
He also added that “Hawaii’s a bunch of guinea pigs, the islands are a bunch of guinea pigs for these companies,” referring to the biotech giants who have taken over the islands for GM crop field trials.
“The track record of Monsanto doesn’t seem to be that good by most people’s calculations. How toxic is that land going to be after it is sprayed with Roundup for 15 years? Its almost going to be unusable for anything else” Slater concluded.
In another anti-GMO video out of Hawaii yesterday, Babes Against Biotech, led by Nomi Carmona, attacked the pro-GMO policies of Colin Barnett’s current government in the surf paradise of Western Australia ahead of elections there on March 9 – Watch It Here!

Robert Kelly Slater (born February 11, 1972, Cocoa Beach, FL, USA) is an American professional surfer known for his competitive prowess and style. He has been crowned ASP World Champion a record 11 times, including 5 consecutive titles from 1994–98. He is the youngest (at age 20) and the oldest (at age 39) to win the title. Upon winning his 5th world title in 1997, Slater passed Australian surfing legend Mark Richards to become the most successful champion in the history of the sport.
Hawai’i GMO Justice Coalition
The is an organization made up of truth tellers who are tired of the chemical status quo. They are dedicated to ending the GMO chemical warfare against our ‘aina from 25 years of GMO field trials and are committed to educating the public about issues not being reported by the mainstream media. They define justice as eviction and reparations.
Time to WAKE UP, this is the tip of a very large iceberg, its political, religious, its medical etc most are slaves to bullshit. The truth is simple, to hide something make it complex. Wisdom is associate with the mountaintop, the view of a journey is a simple path from a to b yet from the path each turn disguises the next

That’s all very well, but if you consider the negative impact the surf industry has had on the environment and take into account the huge increase in popularity caused by the well-marketed Mr Slater, it seems a bit hypocritical. Slater should start with the industry he represents and look at promoting environmentally-friendly products that are built to last (especially surfboards), rather than the short sited consumerism that will eventually destroy the planet.
Hey Chris, criticize Kelly for standing up against this company’s who are trying to take control of the natural food on earth. You either very stupid or work for this corporations
We have eco-friendly boards, and most surfers I know happily pick up rubbish from the beach and have some sort of project or attitude going that will preserve the environment.
I think it’s good Kelly is standing up for this as it is in-fact a major concern, if you think he is missing the point, why don’t you stand up for something and promote it on this website?
Recyclable boards and epoxy only are available anyways for instance from these guys and many more:

I fully agree though on the increased popularity and I see this as a major concern too.
Its stupid logic to call Slater a hypocrite because the surf industry produces environmentally unfriendly products. We all may as well shut our mouths till we all live on completely environmentally lives; what ever that means.
I applaud him for publicly resisting a corporation as blatantly evil as Monsanto.
Maybe we need to “Round them up”.
I hope I speak with some authority, running as I do a cancer charity. Kelly is right in many respects, and probably others in which I am not fully qualified to write. It is the food and drink that we consume that is changing cancer rates, and there is an unequal balance in the funds available to cancer charities and even the pharma world to find ways to treat the new diseases that are afflicting us. Different racial types respond differently to different foods, and this is partly due to millions of years of evolution of the human body. If you consider what YOU eat (and drink) today, it is an entirely different diet to that which even your grandparents ate. Yes, there is a commercial drive by companies, and in part we are gaining from reduced fats in new products and higher fibre content. One final comment: diet (food and drink) is a far more significant factor in cancer and serious illness than smoking.
This is a tricky one because although I hate these big polluting companies, without their massively funded advances in GM strains and chemical pest control were all going to starve by 2050. Intensive organic cropping still has environmental and sustainability drawbacks and lower yields, granted it is directly better for the local bio-dev. Its a real catch 22. Feed the rich with clean and expensive organic produce with a relatively lower cost to the immediate environment. Or feed the masses with continued environmental destruction.
Quiksilver clothing is supplied by GMO companies in India.Kelly endorses Quiksilver who pays him good money to surf.
why people talkin’ while they’re sponsored by corporation who overexploit third world labour? mr. Slater, keep surf plz….
Thanks Kelly, it is people like you that will make the difference in this world, people with a bit of clout. Keep going and make this place a better place
I lived in the Hawaiian paradise of 1960’s, 3 years, could barely afford. cost of ALL food. Finally realized that the loving Creator God originally gave us PURE, HEALTHY FOOD TO EAT and stay well, but mankind now has been addicted/habituated to sugars, unnatural salts, via purposely added chemicals, and have corrupted themselves into greedy profiteers who care not about the effects it has had on mankind, and are still pushing for more , even
deceiving us all into believing the purity of Organic
non-GMO.adulterated foods are undesirablle
that the profits are more important than humans.
I stand firm and united with Organics/ Non-GMOs, and found that by becoming 90% Organic myself, I have become the healthiest fixed incomer I
know provingthat it’s actually MOST POSSIBLE to afford that PURER FOOD CREATED for us all, and not be affected by the hunger-cravings, addictions from additives and sugars because they are not present in
simple organic foods!!! The cost is too similar in the
long run, but the BENEFITS F A R E X C E E D the negatives to our health with the alternatives lining both all shelves and pockets of the govt grown/owned farms of today!!
http://www.overthedune.com/april-fools-from-kelly-slater/ Bags of respect for Slats speaking out on topics like these. Love to believe the move away from Quiksilver is another massive step for him towards protecting our waves? Check my thoughts in the link.
Mahalo Nui Loa Kelly for leading the charge against those greedy Monsanto and other GMO companies who are raping and ruining or beloved Hawaiian Islands! You have the power, respect, and influence to gather and rally the people to drive out these companies out of here! Since the elected politicians are too corrupt and on the take to stop these companies from poisoning the land and it’s people. We’re 1000% behind you with our full support!!!
Mahalo to all involved in producing this: Kelly, Dustin, filmmakers–all who are standing up and speaking out about the insanity of poisoning our lands and waters and people. As Vandana Shiva says, killing our soils is a form of suicide.
The uncontrolled, unrestrained dousing of our lands with chemical cocktails is a homicidal insanity—all done as state agencies ignore the facts, even as their own families suffer the consequences.
